Evaluation Part 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the process from it to the full product?

Since my preliminary task I have learnt how to make my magazine look more professional.  I have realised it is the little things that make the difference, such as page numbers, barcodes.  It also helps if you look back at other magazines when you have finished the first version of yours so that you can get in those few extra details that make a large difference to the product.

Evaluation Part 6

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I was able to further my skills with blogger, Photoshop and a digital camera.  The new products I used for the first time were InDesign and survey monkey.  Survey monkey was very easy to understand as it had step by step instructions to make your survey.  InDesign was also not too bad but a few of its features were a bit annoying as they seemed to have been made overly complicated, for example resizing an image.  In the end I was able to get great results using all the technologies I used and I feel that I would now be fairly confident using them again in the future.

Evaluation Part 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

I made sure that the cover used colours that were bold and would stand out on a magazine rack, without them being an eyesore.  The masthead was done in an elaborate front to ensure that it stood out to the audience and made the magazine look exciting.  The puff used stating that the magazine contains '100 pages of content' was used to persuade the audience that they were getting good value for money.  The cover model was photographed with a smiling happy face to connote to the readers that they will be happy if they read this magazine.  Most of these features were also reflected on the contents page.

Evaluation Part 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

My magazine is aimed mainly at girls aged 16-25.  The readers will therefore be mainly students, but their parents will have quite a high income in the C1-B demographic.  It will be aimed at explorers and aspirers who have brand loyalties that centre on the latest fashion clothing and enjoy going to the more expensive music gigs.  They will frequently purchase music, most likely in the modern download fashion rather than on CD.  Their other interest may include shopping and movies.

Evaluation Part 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

My magazine is ideal for any mass market media institute who is looking to attract a teenage audience.  An example could be Bauer Media who currently publish a wide range of magazines including Kerrang.  My magazine offers them a chance to expand their audience and make more profit.

Evaluation Part 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The social group I have represented is teenage pop music fans.  I have represented them as being fun and enthusiastic, passionate about what they like.  I have done so in a fairly stereotypical way, maintaining a mass market appeal by keeping to the dominant ideologies.  I have made my magazine bold and interwoven the text with several images to keep it exciting and engaging for this type of person.  The writing is fairly chatty which appeals to this teenage audience.

Evaluation Part 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My magazine uses the convention of having an eye catching title positioned at the top of the front cover.  I have used a puff to entice the audience into reading my magazine.  The cover also has cover lines, a price, issue date, issue number and a barcode like traditional magazines.  The cover establishes a house style that is then continued throughout the magazine.

Moving on to the contents page I have arranged the features next to their corresponding page number and attached some to relevant images.  The colours estabilshed by the cover as the house style have been continued so there is a clear link between the pages.  I have also introduced a website to subscribe by, the date of the publication, its name and the page number to the bottom corners of the page.

The double page spread continues some of the established colour scheme and the writing on the bottom corners of the pages, allowing the magazine to slot together naturally.  I have used a large Photoshop edited image of the person that my article is about and placed it on the opposite page, a layout popular with other music magazines.  The article itself is laid out in columns with the first letter enlarged and coloured to make it look like a professional article.

Final Magazine pages

Edited in response to audience feedback and after looking back at other magazines.

Audience Feedback

"I think your front cover contents page and double page spread are ACE i dont think you need to change anything."

"I love the front cover and cannot think of any changes that need to be made :) However on the contents page the images are great :D but the text doesn't look fun to read, maybe a different font or colour would improve it. The double page spread looks great! but the bit of text under the mast head is difficult to read, maybe just move it away from the masthead a little bit :)"

"front cover :

double page spread
